CHE11GEN - General Principles of Chemistry

(Dr John Traeger and Dr Jeff Rowe)

Overall this unit was well received, with an overall rating of 3.7 out of 5 (1 = very poor, 5 = great). There were 121 responses. Most students made use of the extensive web-based material available for this subject and commented favourably on it. However, it has never been the intention of the lecturers to make the web based material identical to the material that is presented in lectures and attendance at lectures is still very important to gain a proper understanding of this unit.

Dr Traeger's lectures were very well received, particularly those in Unit 1. His use of film clips was appreciated. Dr Rowe's online notes were different to his PowerPoint slides leading to some confusion - in future he will make the online notes more similar to the PowerPoint slides used in lectures. Some students complained about not being able to hear Dr Rowe clearly in lectures, a problem he will have to address in 2006. Students liked the experiments during the lectures throughout the semester.

CHE12APL - Applications of Chemistry

(Dr John Traeger, Dr Jeff Rowe and Dr Bruce James)

Overall this unit seems to have been received fairly well, with an overall rating of 3.3 out of 5 (1 = very poor, 5 = great). There were 136 responses. Most students made use of the extensive web-based material available for this subject and commented favourably on it. However, it has never been the intention of the lecturers to make the web based material identical to the material that is presented in lectures.

There were many comments on the survey sheets but not much of a pattern in the comments. Dr Traeger's lectures were particularly well received, although some students found this section difficult. Some students did not find Dr Rowe's lecturing style an entertaining as Dr Traeger's or Dr James's. Some students found him difficult to hear - he needs to address his use of the microphone in this lecture theatre in 2006. Dr James was seen to be an entertaining lecturer. His lectures deliberately did not follow the web based material and some students found this difficult.
