Bachelor of Science Degree Program
Note that from 2010 La Trobe University will no longer offer entry into the Bachelor of Chemical Sciences degree. Interested students can still study the same course of lectures and laboratories from within the Bachelor of Science program.
Chemistry means opportunity! Chemists play a major role in modern economies all over the world. Advances in biological understanding and techniques require chemists to discover and develop the molecules needed for disease control and cure; chemists are instrumental in the design and development of new materials for technologically advanced applications in computers and communications and industries; chemical expertise is essential in the demanding field of chemical analysis; environmental problems, pollution and waste disposal solutions can only be properly understood and implemented by professionals with expertise in chemistry; the increasing pressure to develop clean energy technologies also provides chemistry graduates with many exciting opportunities.
Students of Chemistry are involved in a very creative science that draws upon the advanced skills they learn and utilise at La Trobe University and beyond. Most of our Chemistry candidates will have studied chemistry at VCE level, or equivalent, and have good communication skills. A background in mathematics is an advantage.
The La Trobe University Bachelor of Science program provides students with a focused education in the disciplines forming the basis of chemistry. The program is a major in chemistry.
Key features of the chemistry major degree program include:
- Specialist lectures in Chemical Science topics
- A full 3-year chemistry program (4 with an Honours degree)
- Integrated laboratory program at all years
- Flexible instruction program allowing some specialisation
Further information about the general B.Sc. degree, including entry requirements (eg. ENTER score requirement), is available from the Faculty Bachelor of Science page.
The La Trobe University Science program (with a chemistry major) allows students to take elective subjects in the all three years of the degree. Units can be selected to complement core studies in areas of student interest. The core area of study is chemistry.
The La Trobe University Handbook includes full details of the Bachelor of Science course structure.
