About the Department
We teach chemistry as a way of thinking, with an integrated approach to curriculum design, course development and teaching. As a founding department at La Trobe, we also have a strong culture in research.
Our courses are based on the La Trobe approach to learning, characterised by smaller classes and dedicated teaching staff. Students benefit from close communication with their lecturers, providing an excellent learning environment and many opportunities to work with fellow students.
The chemical science program is strongly focused on laboratory-based chemistry, equipping students with a hands-on experience of science. Our graduates are equipped with the necessary theoretical knowledge to be a practising chemist in research or in industry.
We offer excellent research facilities, as a member of the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Sciences (LIMS) - a $94M facility that will support and expand our teaching and research capabilities.
We are also heavily involved in community programs, inspiring secondary school teachers and students for over 25 years through professional development courses and student demonstrations on campus.
La Trobe University’s chemistry program is fully accredited with the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI), and all graduates are eligible for membership.
The Department of Chemistry is a member of the School of Molecular Sciences.
