Building a future in Bendigo

Maiden Gully resident, Ashley Wilkie has always been fascinated by the idea of building and construction and, as the recipient of the 2009 La Trobe/CPG Australia’s civil engineering scholarship, the first year Bachelor of Engineering student is going to have the chance to further develop his interest.
The scholarship, one of 13 available to La Trobe civil engineering students, is awarded each year to a student starting their degree at La Trobe’s Bendigo campus.
Ashley, a former Bendigo Secondary School student, was ecstatic to receive the CPG award, which provides him with $5000 for each year of his degree and access to a mentoring program with CPG’s civil engineers.
With most Bendigo students taking up regional positions once they graduate, head of civil engineering, Professor Joe Petrolito believes the scholarships are rewarding in many ways.
‘The civil engineering scholarships help our students meet their financial while they study. In return, many of these students take up employment in regional locations, which helps to meet local workforce demands,’ Professor Petrolito said.
‘We are most grateful to organisations such as CPG Australia for their valuable contribution to our students and their support of La Trobe University.’
The scholarship sees Ashley work for CPG Australia throughout his holidays for the duration of his degree, which gives him invaluable industry experience and an income – a combination many students struggle to find.
‘I am looking forward to working in a big company with lots of resources, and which can transform a plain piece of land into something useful. I especially look forward to working for CPG Australia for many years to come.’ said Ashley.
