Helping people with a disability attend weekend camps and recreational activities

Volunteer Program
ROLE 1: Taking clients on weekends away camping, mostly within 2 hours of Melbourne (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon).  Ten campers, ten volunteers and one camp leader.  Clients are in 3 separate age ranges - 6-12 years, 13-18 years, 18+ and occasionally 40+.  Volunteer can choose age range.  Camps run every second weekend.

Role 2:  Saturday all day activities.  2 groups require volunteers to accompany participants on social activities once a month.  Ten participants, ten volunteers and one leader.  Groups go to places like the zoo, museum, footy etc. There are two groups, the Brimbank group for 13-18 year olds with challenging behaviours or Queen Street group for 12-20 year olds with intellectual disabilities.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE:  Good communication skills and reliable. Need to have a genuine interest in working with people with disabilities, and who love the idea of helping people to participate in outdoor recreation activities in a camp environment or day activities.  Volunteers need to be enthusiastic, committed, responsible and have a sense of fun.

COMMITMENT:

Role 1.Volunteers are required to participate in a minimum of two camps. For camps all accommodation and meals are provided except Friday evening meal.

Role 2. Volunteers are required to participate in a minimum of two day activities. For day activities, entry is paid but volunteers need to bring lunch.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS: Initial Interview, then a Saturday 10am – 4pm introductory training program. Scheduled training days are Saturday 18 April, 4 July and 12 September.

TRAINING & SUPPORT: Additional courses in swimming, canoeing, and disabilities are also available. Everything is explained and supervised, games learned - then one-on-one conversation to assess how volunteer feels.
