For Staff
Engaging with students
Many general staff have told us that they would like to get to know our students better and provide them with support to help them with their career development. Even academic staff sometimes feel that they want to engage with students in a more personal way. The following programs may be of interest to you:
Student Career Mentoring Program
Would you like to make a difference?
Would you like to share your experiences?
The Career Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for individuals with at least two years’ experience in the workforce to develop their own coaching, leadership and communication skills by developing a relationship with a student who wants to learn more about a career of interest to them. It also enables students to meet a current practitioner who will share their knowledge and experience, to explore the realities of the world of work or simply to have someone whom they can use as a sounding board.
As a mentor, you will attend an introductory event in April 2009, meet with your mentee a minimum of five times between April and October and then attend a celebration event at the end of the program.
The Career Mentoring Program is available at all our campuses (Albury/Wodonga, Bendigo, Bundoora, Mildura and Shepparton).
Applications for enrolment as a mentor in the 2009 program are open from October 2008, and matching with a student will take place in late March, 2009.

Voluntary work experience
There are many reasons why you may give a student some voluntary work experience in your work area. There may be a project that you’ve wanted to undertake but haven’t been able to because of a shortage of resources or you may need additional support at a busy time.
A student can spend up to 4 weeks (20 days) with your area and the work must be relevant to the discipline that they are studying.
For more details about the program, please go to Voluntary Work Experience Information for La Trobe staff.
