The Armorial Bearings

The full Armorial Bearings comprise three separate elements which are identified as:

  • The Crest
  • The Shield
  • The Motto Scroll

The Armorial Bearings contain three essential references: to Charles Joseph La Trobe, the first Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria; to our geographic situation; and to learning.

The French motto, ‘Qui cherche trouve’, (Whoever seeks shall find) is a modern version of the La Trobe family motto.

The scallop shell, which symbolise pilgrimages are a reference to the Coat of Arms of the La Trobe family.

Australia is represented by the wedge-tailed eagle and Victoria by the chaplet of common heath.

The open book is a symbol of learning.

The full Armorial Bearings should be restricted to use on Testamurs and Certificates and in International marketing material. The words La Trobe University and Australia should be included with each use. It can be reproduced in full colour or any single colour, either as a line or greyscale version. It should be reproduced faithfully at all times and the colours should not be altered from the original provided.

The full Armorial Bearings should not be reproduced any smaller than 30mm in width. This will ensure that the detail is reproduced well each time.
