School of Business

History and other information

The School of Business comprises the Department of Accounting, Department of Economics and Finance and the Department of Management and Marketing. It's head office is located at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus of La Trobe University, about 15km north of the Melbourne city centre, Australia. The school offers subjects primarily within the disciplines of accountancy, economics, finance, human resource management, management and marketing. Bachelor and Honours degrees are offered in business, commerce, economics and finance at Melbourne (Bundoora), as well as combined degrees.

The School teaches a wide range of undergraduate courses including a Bachelor of Business (a flexible degree allowing choice between 5 majors) as well as specialist degrees in accounting, finance, economics and international business. In addition combined degrees (5 year programs) can be taken linking business to law or to asian studies. Graduate coursework programs are offered in several professional areas including accounting, financial management,human resource management, and marketing. Also Honours, Masters and PhD research degrees are offered.

An extensive range of graduate and postgraduate programs are also available. Graduates may be admitted for candidature for the Graduate Diplomas in: Accounting, Business Studies, Econometrics, Economics and Electronic Commerce; Postgraduate Diplomas in Accounting, Economics, Human Resource Management and Marketing; and the postgraduate research degrees of Master of Business, Master of Commerce, Master of Economics and Doctor of Philosophy.

The School's research has an international reputation for its quality and significance. Areas of particular strength are accounting, economics, finance, human resource management, management, management information systems, and marketing. In 2005/2006 the School hosted major conferences or workshops upon industry economics, management information systems, and parliamentary financial inquiry in the Pacific region, sponsored by organisations of the calibre of the World Bank, CRA International, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, and the Productivity Commission.
