Chartered Institute of Accountants student success


La Trobe Business students Chartered Accountants successThe La Trobe School of Business has achieved its best success rate to date in the Chartered Institute of Accountants work experience program. Seven students have received highly sought-after Chartered Accountants Achiever’s Awards for 2006, despite a record number of applications nation-wide and some 280 applicants in the Victoria/Tasmania region alone.

The awards provide first-year students with valuable industry work experience for between six and eight weeks at major accounting firms in their State. Marylou Cork (Deloitte), Steven Gellatly (Accru Danby Bland Provan), Daniel Leong (PKF Chartered Accountants), Matthew Novak, Lucia Rezo (INPACT McDonald Carter) , Maria Tamanas ( WHK Manning & Perry) and Gus Walsgott ( Ernst & Young) all successfully made it through a competitive three-stage selection process, which included group and individual interviews with major accounting firms.

“I believe that our students were motivated to succeed and to take advantages of opportunities such as this when presented to them,” says La Trobe Accounting Lecturer Joanne Lye.

Students are paid, while they obtain valuable hands-on experience, as well as the ability to network with industry professionals.7 June, 2007 work experience offers throughout their degree and even full-time employment upon graduation.

An awards ceremony for the students was held on Wednesday 3 October, at which the successful students met representatives from their placement firms. The evening was also attended by Joanne Lye, along with Patricia Brown from La Trobe Courses and Careers. Together they congratulated each of the winners on their achievements.

The School of Business offers practical and relevant undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Finance and Commerce.
