Maps and Transport

The Melbourne (Bundoora) campus is situated in the north-eastern suburb of Bundoora, at the intersection of Plenty Road and Kingsbury Drive, 14 kms from the city centre (Melways ref: 19 G7 - view location map (PDF - 292 Kb), view campus map (PDF 1.5Mb).

Free pocket-size Transport Access Maps are available from the Union Services Centre (Contact) on the second level of the Agora. These also show the various bicycle routes to and from Campus. A leaflet detailing the Melbourne (Bundoora) self-guided campus tour (PDF 1Mb) is particularly helpful for new students and staff.

By Tram

  • Route 86: Telstra Dome, City - Bundoora/RMIT

Tram 86 runs directly from the Harbour Esplanade in the Docklands (near the Telstra Dome), along Bourke St via Spencer St Station, through the city, up Smith St in Collingwood, through Clifton Hill then up High St through Northcote and Preston. From there it turns right up Plenty Rd, stopping at the La Trobe University Medical Centre. Travel time from La Trobe to/from the City is around 45 mins to 1 hour depending on traffic.

By Train

There is no direct train route to the campus. You will need to connect with one of the following bus/tram routes at the relevant train station:

  • Clifton Hill Station (Hurstbridge/Epping Line) - Bus 246
  • Elsternwick Station (Sandringham Line) - Bus 246
  • Heidelberg Station (Hurstbridge Line) - Bus 550
  • Ivanhoe Station (Hurstbridge Line) - Bus 547/548
  • Macleod Station (Hurstbridge Line) - Bus 561
  • Reservoir Station (Epping Line) - Bus 561
  • Thornbury Station (Epping Line) - Tram 86 on High St

Campus Bus

A circular campus bus service operates every half hour between 8am and 6.15pm, Monday to Sunday. Please view the map and timetable for further information. An after-hours service is also available to escort students/staff from the library to car parks, residences and the tram stop.

By Car

From the City

Heading east from the city, turn north onto Hoddle Street. Enter the Eastern Freeway, and exit at Chandler Highway. Turn left onto the Chandler Highway, and follow onto Grange Road. Turn right onto Livingstone Street. Left onto Waterdale Road. Follow Waterdale Road through Ivanhoe, over Bell Street, and straight onto the La Trobe University campus at the South Entry (corner of Waterdale Road and Kingsbury Drive).

From the Western Ring Road

Exit the Western Ring Road at Plenty Road. Turn right onto Plenty Road towards Bundoora. Turn left onto Kingsbury Drive (at the La Trobe University Medical Centre), and left again to enter the University at the North Entry, or follow Kingsbury Drive to enter at the West Entry, or further again along Kingsbury Drive to the South Entry (corner Waterdale Road).

From Melbourne Airport

Take the Tullamarine Freeway to the Western Ring Road, then exit onto the Western Ring Road heading east towards the Hume Highway. Cross the Hume Highway onto the Metropolitan Ring Road, still heading east towards Bundoora. Exit the Ring Road at Plenty Road, and head south down Plenty Road until you reach La Trobe University at Kingsbury Drive.

Car Parking

All car parking at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus is by payment or permit only. Daily payment may be in the form of cash or by using the La Trobe Card and this can differ at each car park. A certain number of reserved spaces are available for staff and students. These must be applied for in person at the Traffic and Parking office.

Disabled Parking

Spaces for disabled drivers are available in most of the car parks closest to the University buildings. Car parks 1 and 8 also have a number of disabled bays. Visit Traffic and Parking for further information.

Car Pooling

A car pool service exists for car and non-car owners. Members receive a sticker on purchasing a parking permit that guarantees them a space in the Car Pool car park. It’s a great way to meet new people and share the cost of getting to the University.

By Bicycle

Cycling to campus is a great way to keep fit and it’s free! Pick up a free Transport Access Map (available from Contact in the Agora) for details of suggested bike routes to and from the University.

There are around 150 bike lockers on-campus available for hire. Keys are available from the Administration Office, Union Building, on the first day of semester each year.

The Union Building and the Sports Centre have showers in the main male and female toilets. Free towels and soap for the Union showers are available from the Union Administration Office on presentation of your student card.
