Issue: October 2005NewsNew Professors of Physiotherapy and AccountingTwo new Professors of AccountingTwo leading researchers and teachers in corporate accountability and corporate disclosure of information - Carol Adams and Kamran Ahmed - have been appointed as Professors of Accounting in the La Trobe University School of Business.
Professor Carol Adams is an internationally recognised researcher in the area of corporate accountability. She has to her credit more than 80 publications on corporate initiatives in social and environmental reporting and international financial reporting. Some of these have been published in international journals such as Accounting Organisations and Society, the Accounting Auditing and Accountability Journal, Abacus and Accounting and Business Research. She is currently Professor of Accounting and former Head of the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance, at Deakin University. She has previously held positions of Professor of Accounting and Head of Business and Economics at Monash University, Gippsland, from 2002 to 2004 and prior to that Professor of Accounting and Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance at Glasgow University. Professor Adams has served as a Director and Council member of the Institute of Social and Ethical Accountability and is a Fellow of CPA Australia. She is also a Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. She is regional editor of the journal, Indonesian Management and Accounting Research, and associate editor of the Journal of Contemporary Accounting and Organizational Change and is on the editorial board of a number of journals including the Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, the Australian Accounting Review, Accounting Forum and the Journal of Corporate Citizenship. Professor Adams holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accountancy and Business Law from the University of Stirling, UK, a Master of Science degree in Accounting and Finance, from the London School of Economics (University of London), and a PhD from the University of Glasgow.
Professor Kamran Ahmed's research deals with corporate disclosure of information in emerging economies and accounting policy choice on which he published papers in reputed international journals and a book last year titled Corporate Financial Reporting in Emerging Countries, (South Asia Publishers). He has also research interest in capital market research in accounting, specifically on the market response to research and development accounting in Australia. Previously Associate Professor in Accounting at La Trobe University, he joined the University in 1999. He has taught financial accounting and management accounting at the University of New England, Victoria University of Wellington, NZ, the Australian National University, and the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has also worked as a financial analyst for the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation. He holds a Bachelor (Hons) and Masters degree in Commerce from the University of Dhaka, an MBA from the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, and a PhD in Accounting from the Australian National University. Professor Ahmed teaches financial accounting, management accounting, international accounting and business research methods, and has also developed elective teaching subjects in international accounting. A Certified Practicing Accountant, he holds professional memberships with the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh, the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand, and the American Accounting Association. Dr Karen Dodd has been appointed Professor of Physiotherapy and Head of the School of Physiotherapy at La Trobe University. Professor Dodd is a leading researcher in the physical rehabilitation of people who have stroke and cerebral palsy and has helped improve the quality of life for older people and people with chronic disabilities. She currently holds the position of Associate Professor of Allied Health, La Trobe University, located at Ballarat Health Services. Professor Dodd is widely recognised for her research into gait analysis after stroke and into the special movement problems faced by children with cerebral palsy. She has also designed, evaluated and helped implement a number of innovative programs in physical activity and strength training for older people and people with chronic disabilities. These are now being used by many clinicians and health services. Professor Dodd heads a team which conducts research in close collaboration with allied health professionals at health care agencies in metropolitan Melbourne and in regional areas. She leads four multidisciplinary allied health research projects with health services in the Ballarat region. Professor Dodd holds a Doctorate and Graduate Diploma qualifications from La Trobe University and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Physiotherapy) degree from Lincoln Institute. She has worked as a lecturer and senior lecturer in the School of Physiotherapy at La Trobe University since 1990 where she has had extensive experience in creating and delivering evidence-based education programs to undergraduate students and postgraduate clinicians in physiotherapy. Prior to that she worked with Child and Family Services within the Victorian Health Department, the Werribee Community Health Centre, the former Lincoln Institute of Health Sciences, as well as the Queen Victoria Medical Centre and Spastic Society of Victoria.
