Issue: September 2004PeopleLibrarian wins hearing awareness awardLa Trobe University reference librarian, Valerie Forbes, was up among the big names when the Deafness Foundation handed out its annual awards during Hearing Awareness Week recently. Awards for clear speech went to Angela Pippos (sport), Jennifer Kyte (news), Jon Faine (radio) - and to Val Forbes for outstanding service to people with hearing loss. Ms Forbes, who has worked in the Borchardt Library at La Trobe's Melbourne (Bundoora) campus since 1990, received recognition for her services to hearing impaired La Trobe students and visitors using the library. A reference librarian in the areas of Deaf Studies, European Languages and Literature, English, Linguistics, and Cinema and Media Studies, Ms Forbes has introduced an online learning program at the University to bring together in a virtual community deaf students, lecturers and library staff. She has also established an e-mail distribution list to notify people about new books, websites, newspaper articles and other items of interest to the deaf community.
