Great Ideas of Biology

‘Great Ideas of Biology’ – ranging from cells, genes and evolution to life as chemistry and the speculative realm ofhow chemistry translates to biological function – were discussed by Professor SirPaul Nurse when he delivered this year’s Nancy Millis Lecture.

Sir Paul is a Nobel Prize-winning British biologist who discovered the gene which controls cell division, an important advance in the quest to understand the growth and development of cancer.

Sir Paul is also renowned for his strong advocacy that scientists need to engage at grass roots level, not just with intellectual elites but all parts of society. He recently told the BBC: ‘I’d even say science is key to democracy, because science touches so much in all our political decisions.

’Sir Paul is the eighth distinguished biologist to deliver La Trobe University’s annual Nancy Millis Lecture, in honour of eminent scientist and former La Trobe Chancellor, Emeritus Professor Nancy Millis.

Previous Millis lecturers have included Australian of the Year, Professor Ian Frazer, Professor Peter Doherty and Sir Gustav Nossal.
