Focus on Asia-Pacific security and co-operation

Only a radical shift by govern-ments and organised religion - and a willingness to accept that safeguarding life is more important than preserving antiquated moral precepts - will bring the resources and the messages about safer sex to those who are most vulnerable.

La Trobe University - in association with one of China's leading universities, East China Normal University, Shanghai - recently held a two-day symposium dealing with security and co-operation in the Asia Pacific region.

The symposium brought to Australia a high-powered delegation of scholars and officials and was followed by a two-day visit to the Australian National University and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra. The delegation, organised by Professor Feng Shao Lei, East China Normal University, included Ambassador Yang Chengxu, Chairman of China's National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation, who gave one of two keynote addresses, and Professor Shen Dingli, a leading Chinese international relations and arms control expert.

Among other delegates were Mr Luo Yuan, Director of National Security Strategy Studies Section at the Chinese National Academy of Military Sciences, and Mr Wu Yikang, Vice-Chairman of Chinese Association for World Economy.

Symposium convener, La Trobe University Professor of International Relations, Joseph Camilleri, delivered the second keynote address.
