McGarvie Chair of Socio-Legal Studies

La Trobe University has established the Richard McGarvie Chair of Socio-Legal Studies to honour the memory of its late Chancellor, Richard McGarvie. The Chair is a research position linked to the Institute of Advanced Study.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Osborne, announced that Professor Margaret Thornton from the School of Law and Legal Studies and a distinguished socio-legal researcher, has accepted appointment to this position.

Mr McGarvie, a former Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria and Governor of Victoria, served as the University’s third Chancellor from 1981 to 1992. Heavily involved with organisations pertaining to legal and human rights, he died in May 2003. •
