Issue: July 2004OlympicsSporting Greek MuseLa Trobe's Greek Studies Program has had no athletes participating in the Olympics since the ultra-marathon runner, Yiannis Kouros, graduated several years ago. But it has made a contribution to the 'Cultural Olympics' by organising the Fourth Annual La Trobe Greek Poetry Evening devoted to 'The Sporting Greek Muse'. Held in the run-up to the Olympics and sponsored the Greek Ministry of Culture - which has responsibility for Athens 2004 - the evening featured presentations by staff, associates and friends of the Greek Studies Program on Greek poets from Homer to Trypanis writing about sports ranging from athletics to jousting. Presentations by La Trobe academic staff members included Modern Greek Sporting Muse by the Head of Hellenic Studies, Professor Stathis Gauntlett: Odysseus the Athlete by School of Arts and Entertainment lecturer, Dr Roger Sworder; and Sportsmanship in Renaissance Crete by honorary research associate in the Archaeology Program Dr Elizabeth Pemberton, see main story, left.
