Issue: June 2004BooksBenefits and catastrophes of strategic managementStrategic management in this era of globalisation is 'challenging and dangerous,' says La Trobe University Professor of Economics, Colin White. In a new book - launched recently by Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Kevin Rudd - Professor White, from the University's Graduate School of Management, says 'strategic management is a complex web of differing theories and approaches, continuously emerging and evolving'. 'More intuitive than rational, if done well it offers significant benefits. If done badly, losses can be catastrophic.' Titled Strategic Management, the book has been published internationally by Palgrave Macmillan and is aimed at MBA and upper level management students. It is accompanied by a companion website for both students and lecturers. The site, www.palgrave.com/business/white, enables access to additional case studies, links to other sites, a searchable glossary of terms and complementary lecturer resources. The book deals with the challenges of formulating, implementing and monitoring strategy in practice. It discusses theories and approaches in the context of real-world practice, considers the global nature of strategy for multinational corporations and deals with the critical role of implementation, monitoring and risk within organisations.
