Gift for campus on the mooove

She may look a bit minimalist next to Moomaid or Goldie Horn, below, but this gift from the Greater Shepparton City Council has given La Trobe University a firm hoof-hold in the artistic life of the region.

Gift for campus on the moooveSince it was introduced five years ago, Shepparton’s life-sized parade of fibreglass sculpted cows has become a great promotional device for the central Victorian town. Collections have been displayed around the world, at the Royal Melbourne Agricultural Show – and any tourist to Shepparton today is hard-pressed to avoid them.

Sponsored by local industry, some feature art works which range from reproductions of Dali and da Vinci to originals by Ken Done.

Head of the Shepparton Campus, Elizabeth Lavender, said the Council presented the cow as a symbol of its support for the University.

La Trobe earlier this year announced plans for its new campus building, part of the Shepparton Education Precinct. A local artist, ‘Tank’, designed and painted the cow.

Ms Lavender said the sculpture will eventually be located in front of the new University building.
