Issue: April 2005NewsAboriginal Culture at La Trobe Children’s CentreThe La Trobe University Children’s Centre has received a grant to provide Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educational participation, enhancement and support.
The grant was awarded under the Federal Department of Education, Science and Training through the program of Indigenous Education and Strategic Initiatives. An early activity was a day of introduction to Aboriginal culture by La Trobe University student, Mr Sam Juparulla Wickman, whose son Leeroy attends the Centre. He presented to 20 four to five year-old-children aspects of culture which included story telling, dance and translation of a story into artwork. The completed artwork will hang in the Centre’s new building when it is completed in August this year. Centre director Ms Jenny Reynolds said it was an amazing experience for the children, engendering an unprecedented interest not only from the children but also parents, staff and visitors.
