La Trobe participates in Como Writers' Festival

A weekend of literary events conducted in conjunction with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), the event attracted both national and international writers.

La Trobe University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences - a prominent contributor to Melbourne Writers' Festivals - co-sponsored two sessions with Isabel Allende, niece of the assassinated President of Chile and now a world best selling author.

Dr Lilit Thwaites of La Trobe's Spanish Program and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, held two public 'conversations' with Ms Allende, one on 'Writing' and the other on 'Chile'.

Another La Trobe academic staff member, Dr Susan Turnbull of the Media Studies Program, was 'in conversation' with well-known crime fiction writer Kerry Greenwood, author of 19 novels.

Chair of Melbourne Writers' Festival Inc. and La Trobe University Adjunct Professor, Morag Fraser, chaired a discussion with Bev Roberts, Anita Selzer and John Cain on the subject, From Bricks to Mortar to Pen & Paper: Writing Melbourne History. Professor Fraser also had a 'conversation' with author Amanda Lohrey.

This was the inaugural 'Writers at Como' and was conducted in addition to the regular Melbourne Writers' Festival held every August. •
