Second doctorate for Dr Anthony Potts

Dr Anthony Potts, a senior lecturer at La Trobe University Bendigo School of Education, qualified for his second doctorate - a Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences - in February in what he described as 'a most interesting manner'.

The second degree was from one of Europe's oldest and greatest universities - the Katholieke University of Leuven in Belgium.

His doctoral program consisted of international conference presentations, his monograph Civic Leaders and the University, a selection of three other refereed articles, his thesis on Researching Town and Gown - and a demanding public defence.

The defence consisted of Dr Potts being quizzed by an academic panel of six - plus additional questions by members of the general public with an interest in his speciality of universities' relationships with the towns in which they are situated.

A specialist in educational history, Dr Potts received his first doctorate in 2000 from the University of Technology, Sydney on Continuity and Change in Academic Life.

Dr Potts firstly defended his thesis in November, 2003 and returned to Leuven for the second public defence and to graduate in February this year.

Founded in 1425, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven is one of 11 universities comprising the European Research Universities representing the top universities in the fields of medicine, science and social science.
