Issue: March/April 2007NewsCommunication link with MilduraLa Trobe University has launched a new state-of-the-art microwave communication link for voice, data, video-conferencing and streaming video between the main Melbourne campus at Bundoora and its Mildura campus. Mildura’s remoteness and the lack of competitive ICT infrastructure providers to the region meant the link was built with special assistance of $1.9 million in Commonwealth DEST Capital Development Pool infrastructure funding. The University contracted ATI (Aust) to erect a network of 11 towers and microwave dishes ranging from .6 to 2.4 m diameter along a 350km path from Bendigo to Mildura to enable connection to the La Trobe backbone network, which already extends from Melbourne to Bendigo, Shepparton, Beechworth and Wodonga. Mildura Campus Director, Mr Ron Broadhead, said the new link, running at a speed of over 100 megabits per second, now provides the Mildura campus with high speed, reliable communication services to Bundoora and then on to all La Trobe campuses.
