Issue: January/February 2004PeopleBusiness, Law appointments at BendigoMarketing and management expert, Rhett Walker, has been appointed Professor of Business (Regional Development) at La Trobe University Bendigo. His appointment includes the role of Academic Director of the University's Centre for Sustainable Regional Communities (CSRC) established to help communities move forward. Professor Walker has more than 25 years of senior level marketing and management experience, mainly within the electronic communications and entertainment industry in Australia, UK and USA. He played a central role in establishing commercial FM broadcasting in Australia and has received several industry accolades including a prestigious Australian Hoover Marketing Award. The University has also appointed lawyer and specialist in legal aid issues, Frances Gibson, to head its new Law degree at Bendigo. This is the first year a Bachelor of Law program is being offered at the Bendigo campus to encourage more regional students to study and practice law. The program has attracted some 30 students. Prior to her appointment at Bendigo, Ms Gibson was a Director and senior lecturer at the Kingsford Legal Centre at the Law Faculty of the University of New South Wales. She has worked with the Aboriginal Legal Service and the Legal Aid Commission of New South Wales, and was a Principal Lawyer with the Independent Commission Against Corruption (1995). In 1999, she was invited to be the first Visiting Clinical Scholar at New York University for six months and holds a number of awards for the quality of her teaching. She has also been selected by the Human Rights Commission as the leader of a delegation from Australia to China to work with Chinese lawyers on legal aid issues.
