Plans for Goulburn Valley unveiled

Vice-Chancellor Paul Johnson and Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Eric Bott have signed a memorandum of understanding for both organisations to maximise higher education opportunities, enrolments and research prospects in Shepparton.

Professor Johnson said the move was an important step towards establishing better access to higher education for the people of the Goulburn Valley. He said La Trobe would contribute two million dollars to Federal and State funds for a new campus building.

'There are many more important elements to the development of Shepparton as a learning city, and these all have "partnership" as their bedrock – and I look forward to seeing the partnership between La Trobe and Shepparton grow,' said Professor Johnson.

Mayor Eric Bott said: 'It is fantastic to see La T robe shares our vision. Council has a long-term strategy for tertiary education in Shepparton and the University's presence in our city is a major part of that.'

He said it would help bring people into the area and keep young people in the country by providing more extensive study options locally.
