Workshop 2: Microscopic Identification of Filamentous Bacteria in Activated Sludge

November 9 , 09:00-17:00 (duration 1 day)

** See also, Workshop, November 6-8

This is an intensive (1 day) workshop offered by the internationally experienced staff of the Biotechnology Research Centre, and is derived from their popular residential course.

The workshop explains the use of microbiological and microscopic techniques to analyze and troubleshoot filament related problems such as bulking and foaming in activated sludge plants. It also discusses the use of latest molecular techniques for the identification of these bacteria.

Most of the presenters contributed chapters to "Microbiology of Activated Sludge" (ed RJ Seviour & LL Blackall).

Workshop topics include:

  • Basic microbiology of the activated sludge process.
  • Sampling, sample preservation and preparation.
  • Microscopic monitoring of activated sludge.
  • Laboratory sessions.
  • Discussion sessions on latest research information.
  • Analysis and discussion of brought samples.

A common foam forming organism from activated sludge. Do you know how to quickly identify and control its affect on your plant?

Who should attend?

Managers, engineers and operators involved in the operation of conventional and nutrient removal municipal and industrial activated sludge plants.

Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of their plant sludge for examination during the workshop (see sample collection below). Extensive notes and an identification manual will be provided. Certificates will be given to registrants completing the workshop.

Sample Collection: Collect a fresh 5mL sample of mixed liquor and/or foam in a 20mL plastic container to allow plenty of airspace. Ensure container is tightly capped, and labelled. Mixed liquor and foam should be stored separately. Keep samples cold with an ice pack during storage/transportation.

Workshop Registration

Registrations close 15th October.

Places are strictly limited and late registrations may be subject to an additional $100 booking fee.

Workshop registration is AU$400 +GST for the 1 day workshop.

Registration includes workshop notes, lunch, morning and afternoon tea, and a Filamentous Bacteria poster.
