Pelargonium rodneyanum belongs in the geranium family. Its common name is Magenta Stork's-bill . It flowers October to Feburary in clusters of 4 to 6 flowers with deep rosy-magenta petals. The markings on the top two petals serve to guide the pollinating insect to the nectar source and ensure its contact with the pollen-bearing organs. It is very likely that these markings are even more striking with the ultra-violet vision possessed by many insects. Pollen images light microscopy electron microscopy |
