You may have just one therapist in the room with you, or there may be two
therapists working together. When working with more than one therapist,
the other one may either work behind a one-way mirror or in the room with
the family. This enables the therapists to review the sessions and make
sure they have not missed anything important about the family. Some
families are asked if they are prepared to be seen by a team of therapists
with one in the interview room and a small group of other therapists with a
supervisor behind the one-way mirror. These student therapists are already
qualified in psychology, social work or one of the other health or welfare
degrees, but are doing postgraduate training in family therapy. Although
some families feel self-conscious with a group behind the screen, most get
to like the opportunity it provides to get ideas and feedback from a number
of different people. It is fairly common practice for the team behind the
mirror to 'swap places' at some stage with the family, so that they 'think
aloud' in the interview room with family members having the chance to
listen and comment on their thoughts. Almost all families who have taken
part in this 'reflecting team' process find it a useful and enriching
experience.
