COURSE OUTLINE 2008

The Graduate Certificate in Systemic Supervision, Consultation & Training a clinically based postgraduate course designed for family therapists, counsellors and psychotherapists.

It provides education and development in supervision, consultation and training. It will be the first postgraduate training qualification in supervision, consultation and training ever offered at tertiary level in Australia. It is designed to meet the needs of experienced practitioners who, although already supervising and teaching therapy, have not had the opportunity to be formally trained to do so.

The course is supported by the Training, Accreditation and Development Committee of the Victorian Association of Family Therapists (VAFT) and the Society for Counselling and Psychotherapy Educators (SCAPE) which is the training arm of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA).


COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is one year part-time conducted on site at The Bouverie Centre one day a week for two 13-week semesters. The course will consist of four compulsory units, a total of 60 credit points. There are no electives. Two units cover theoretical models of systemic supervision, consultation and training and a further two units focus on systemic practice in these areas. Students are required to attend for seven hours per week.

Unit Title: THEORETICAL MODELS OF SYSTEMIC SUPERVISION
Unit Code: FTH4TSS

This unit will cover models of systemic supervision, dynamics of the supervision process, supervision ethics and values, and the use of 'reflecting teams process' in supervision. Models and frameworks of supervision will be explored and critiqued from a postmodern perspective. Corequisites: FTH4SSP. Students must be enrolled in HCFTS Graduate Certificate in Systemic Supervision, Consultation and Training or seek co-ordinator approval.

Credit Points: 15
Semester: 1
Class Requirements: one 3-hour lecture per week
Assessment: one 3,000-word essay (75%), one 1,500-word essay (25%)


Unit Title: SYSTEMIC SUPERVISION PRACTICE
Unit Code: FTH4SSP

In this unit students will:
a) take part in live supervision and participate in the reflecting team
b) integrate theories and practices of supervision congruent with systemic ideas
c) focus on particular styles of working with supervisees from systemic perspectives
d) examine the processes and dynamics of use of self in supervision
e) understand the practice and significance of feedback and evaluation in supervision
f) examine record keeping, ethics and professional development

Credit Points: 15
Semester: 1
Corequisites: FTH4TSS, Students must be enrolled in HCFTS Graduate Certificate in Systemic Supervision, Consultation and Training or seek co-ordinator approval.
Class Requirements: one 4-hour practicum per week
Assessment: three 1,500-word analyses of supervision (100%)


Unit Title: THEORETICAL MODELS OF SYSTEMIC CONSULTATION AND TRAINING

Theories of Systemic Therapy Training and Consultation will be taught covering: (a) adult learning theories in teaching and learning i) strategies for teaching structural, strategic systemic, solution focussed, family of origin, narrative, and constructivist theories of systemic practice ii) feminist cultural and gender issues in training and consultation dynamics (b) comparative differences in supervision, training and consultation etc. (c) teaching in groups, use of group process, developing experiential exercises to teach family therapy theories and practices (d) assessment and evaluation dynamics and techniques.

Unit Description: Prerequisites: FTH4TSS, FTH4SSP
Corequisites: FTH4CTP. Students must be enrolled in HCFTS Graduate Certificate in Systemic Supervision, Consultation and Training or seek co-ordinator approval.

Assessment: one 2,000-word essay (50%) one 2,500-word essay (50%)


Unit Title: SYSTEMIC CONSULTATION AND TRAINING PRACTICE
Unit Code: FTH4CTP

The practicum will cover planning and implementation of teaching exercises for teaching systemic theories and other related theories of clinical practice in family therapy. Students will explore styles of consultation and training. Students will be required to present two seminars on significant issues and dynamics in the practice of teaching and consultation.

Prerequisites: FTH4TSS, FTH4SSP
Corequisites: FTH4TCT. Students must be enrolled in HCFTS Graduate Certificate in Systemic Supervision, Consultation and Training or seek co-ordinator approval.
Class Requirements: one 4-hour practicum per week
Assessment: one 45-minute seminar assessed by established criteria (45%)
one 45-minute teaching presentation assessed by established
criteria (45%)
