COURSE OUTLINE 2008
This one-year, part-time certificate course is designed to present theories and practices useful in working with individuals, families and communities. Drawing on post-structural and narrative theory and practice, participants working in a variety of professional roles will be encouraged to relate their learnings to their own work settings.
The course will be undertaken six hours per week over two semesters of 13 weeks each.
Further professional supervision and family therapy training would be required for accreditation as a family therapist.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Unit Title: NARRATIVE THERAPY THEORY A
Unit Code: FTH4NTA
In this unit, students will examine the development of Narrative Therapy and explore the differences between modern and post modern thought as they affect therapeutic approaches generally. Students will explore Narrative theory in some detail and learn the theory behind practice approaches.
Semester: 1
Class requirements: one 3-hour seminar per week.
Assessment: one 2,500-word essay (75%); one group oral presentation (15-minutes /member) (25%)
Co-requisite: FTH4NPA. Students must be enrolled in Graduate Certificate in Narrative Therapy or seek co-ordinator approval.

Unit Title: NARRATIVE THERAPY THEORY B
Unit Code: FTH4NTB
In this unit students will examine the role of constructionism in the development of problem narratives and their resolution. Students will learn the effects of power and discourse in the formation of identity, through the processes of deconstruction and will link these theories with practice equivalents.
Semester: 2
Class requirements: one 3-hour seminar per week.
Assessment: one 4,125-word essay (100%)
Co-requisite: FTH4NPB. Students must be enrolled in Graduate Certificate in Narrative Therapy or seek co-ordinator approval.

Unit Title: NARRATIVE THERAPY PRACTICE A
Unit Code: FTH4NPA
In this unit students will witness and experience practical demonstrations of Narrative Therapy interactively in small groups. This will lead to the development of competencies including externalising, outsider witnessing, curiosity, mapping effects of problematic stories, re-authoring and co-authoring conversations.
Semester: 1
Class requirements: One 3-hour seminar per week.
Assessment: One 1,250-word reflective journal (40%) Hurdle requirement: students in conjunction with supervisors will identify learning goals; one 50-minute individual oral presentation (60%)

Unit Title: NARRATIVE THERAPY PRACTICE B
Unit Code: FTH4NPB
In this unit students will continue to witness and experience practical demonstrations of Narrative Therapy interactively in small groups. There will be a consolidation of the competencies gained in FTH41NPA and a reflection on the politics of practice. Specifically the therapeutic relationship will be explored and reflected upon from the students’ personal narratives, so that the student will become a responsible and ethical practitioner.
Semester: 2
Class requirements: One 3-hour seminar per week.
Assessment: One 1,250-word reflective journal (50%); one 30-minute clinincal assessment practicum (50%)
Co-requisite: FTH4NTB. Students must be enrolled in Graduate Certificate in Narrative Therapy or seek co-ordinator approval.
Prequisite: FTH4NTA, FTH4NPA
