    Counselling Philosophy

The ABI team is informed by a family-sensitive philosophy recognising that ABI impacts on all family members. We realise the importance of working collaboratively and in partnership with family members and recognise that positive outcomes for the injured individual is often highly dependent upon other family members receiving the support and assistance they need. Family members may also need and deserve support in their own right. Acquired Brain Injury presents unique challenges for parents, spouses and children; the initial trauma and crisis period is followed by a complex process of adjustment to longer term changes. Families often need help and support in dealing with feelings of grief and loss, anger and rage, hopelessness and helplessness as they strive to adapt to these profound changes in their lives. Although the discovery of internal strengths and powerful inner resources is often an eventual outcome, support for all family members and other carers is typically needed along the way.
