Research specialisations

Some of our research programs are independent while others are conducted jointly with other organsations such as the Department of Primary Industries, GRDC, and Parks Victoria. The Department also has international links through Australian Government funded research projects in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Plant reproduction, molecular ecology and evolution

Our research focuses on broader evolutionary questions pertinent to both native and invasive plant species. This is frequently underpinned by assessment of reproductive traits and gene flow.

Plant ecology

We focus our attention on temperate native grasslands, semi-arid woodlands, on alpine ecosystems and coastal forests.

Conservation biology

Our studies into the invasion of forest by yellow crazy ants and scale insects shows they are the single largest threat to the biodiversity of Christmas Island.

Molecular interactions at the plant-fungal interface

Our research is focused on the interactions of pathogenic fungi and plants.

Plant Pathology and Mycology

Investigating issues such as the cause of brown rot of stone fruit in Victoria and the management of pests and diseases of cocoa in Indonesia.

Plant development and biotechnology

We are researching plant hormones, regulation of pollen development, and MYB genes and plant development.

Plant development and physiology

Our laboratory uses genetic and molecular approaches to study aspects of plant development and physiology.
