Bachelor of Science (Biological Sciences)

First Year

Year 1 of the BSc (Biol Sciences) consists of subjects in Biology, Chemistry, and some optional subjects. All subjects are one semester (half-year) in length, and in Year 1 eight such subjects are studied; four in Biology, and one in Chemistry are compulsory. To study Biochemistry in Year 2, it is necessary to take two semester subjects in Chemistry.

Second Year

In Year 2, students take six semester-length subjects, selected from the five Biological Science Departments (Biochemistry, Botany, Genetics, Microbiology, Zoology), and Chemistry. Some other options are also possible. Usually, students study in three Departments for the whole year.

Biochemistry offers one subject in each semester, as a foundation for Year 3 studies.

The second year Biochemistry class enrolment is in the range 150-200.

Third Year

In Year 3, students take four semester-length subjects; in all cases second year study in that subject is a prerequisite. Biochemistry offers one subject in each semester. Most students study in two Departments for the whole year, thus obtaining a double major, for example Biochemistry and Chemistry; Biochemistry and Botany, etc.

The third year Biochemistry class enrolment is in the range 60-80.

Honours

A fourth year (Honours) is available to students who perform well in Year 3.  This is normally entirely based in one Department.  Biochemistry Honours is partly research based and partly course-work, but the research project is the main component.  Students work in a laboratory under the supervision of a member of the lecturing staff, on a project associated with the research program of that laboratory.  It is an opportunity to gain experience in each area, using modern equipment, and to become familiar with general laboratory operations.

Other Degrees

It is also possible to study Biochemistry from other Science degrees, such as the general Bachelor of Science.  Other degrees offered through the Department of Biochemistry are:
