Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing industries worldwide, with revenue from public biotechnology companies surpassing US$70 billion in 2006 (E&Y Global Biotechnology Report 2007).

Class of 2008

La Trobe University offers a two year Masters of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics program, which commences in February or July. This hands-on, technique intensive course has a strong research focus, with the aim to train and equip graduates with the skills and training necessary to work in the biotechnology and bioinformatics sector. The Masters course contains one year of coursework, and a one year internship. Graduates will be qualified to work in emerging biotechnology enterprises in Australia and overseas or undertake further studies towards a PhD by research. La Trobe University is situated in Melbourne, Australia, a leading hub in the Asia-Pacific biotechnology sector.

Biochemistry at La Trobe

The Master of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics is managed and coordinated by the Department of Biochemistry, which has a very strong research culture. Members of the Department are also part of the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Biomarker Translation and the Centre of Excellence for Coherent X-ray Science. The Department has strong ties to many hospitals and biotechnology companies (AdAlta, Hexima Ltd, Royal Children's Hospital). The Department of Biochemistry has a joint mission of teaching and research with it being an integral component of the Australian Institute for Molecular Medicine (AIMM). Biochemistry is taught at second and third year level in a range of Bachelor of Science degrees, Honours and postgraduate degrees by research at Masters and PhD levels.
