Department of Biochemistry

We are responsible for teaching biochemistry and molecular biology units to undergraduates in the second and third year of the Bachelor of Science (Biological Sciences) course. A fourth, BSc(Hons) year is also available. In a typical year, we have 150-200 students enrolled in second year Biochemistry, 70 in third year and 15 doing Honours. We also have about 45 students enrolled in PhD degrees. A large proportion of students learning Biochemistry are enrolled in the specialised course streams of Agricultural Science, Animal Science, Nutrition, Medical Science and Bioinformatics. Cash prizes are awarded annually to the top student(s) in each level. We have also recently developed a Master of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics degree.
