About the Department
The Department of Biochemistry has a proud history of in-depth teaching and excellent research. There are currently 19 active research labs within the Department, each one supported by substantial external funding totalling more than $7 million per annum.
Our strong research culture is demonstrated by the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) ratings. In biochemistry and cell biology, La Trobe is rated well above world standard.
The Department is also bolstered by its founding involvement in the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS), an elite organisation designed to train the next generation of Australian scientists. The $94.1 million LIMS building offers students state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities.
The Department is situated within the School of Molecular Sciences.
