Shepparton Campus Building

Purpose

This project will provide the University with a new campus building in Shepparton. Previously the University operated out of limited space shared with the Goulburn Ovens TAFE (GOTAFE). Within the new building, the University will be able to expand their course offerings in modern facilities.

Shepparton Building

Reason for the project

Providing a secure environment is important to La Trobe University. The University seeks to further prevent crime using concepts commonly known as Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED). In combination with security technologies, a safety zone can be achieved reducing perceived threats and enabling students and staff to traverse the campus in confidence.

Sufficient lighting during both day and night is necessary so that people can see and be seen. Poor lighting is not the only reason that assaults or risks can occur at night. Other factors include using alcohol, scarcity of people and being outside the normal time of socialising. However, improving lighting can have a substantial impact on reducing fear of crime.

The Plenty road bus interchange and tram stops are considered as a public transport hub and therefore it is important that students and staff of the University are encouraged to utilise these services with their safety in mind, particularly while entering or leaving the campus.
