Lighting and security upgrade project - Car park 7, 7a and 8

Purpose

Continuation of the ‘Safe Campus Security Strategy 2007’

Replace existing car park lighting and enhance Car park 7, Car park 7a and Car Park 8 with modern Car park lighting standards incorporating security and safety strategies; namely, purpose built lighting towers, surveillance systems via fibre optic communications to the Security Communications Room.

Reason for the project

Providing a secure environment is important to La Trobe University. The University seeks to further prevent crime using concepts commonly known as Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED). In combination with good lighting and surveillance systems, clear lines of sight via miscellaneous foliage reduction, criminal activity can be further deterred.

An increase in criminal activity has occurred in these car parks in the past two years due to poor lighting systems, no surveillance systems and foliage obstruction. Car Parks 1, 2, 2a and 6 have modern systems installed and have reduced crime in the areas by up to 60%, criminal activity in Car Park 7, 7a and 8 has occurred as criminals have moved to these areas where the likely-hood of conducting criminal activity without retribution is high.
