Ring Road Safety Improvements

Purpose

Improvement measures to reduce vehicle speed and increase pedestrian safety on the Ring Road.

Reason for the project

This project has been promulgated by a number of public concerns over the past 3 years regarding safety on the Ring Road.  These concerns are based on reported excessive vehicle speeds in particular from car park 7 to the Children's Centre.

Over the past three years actual and average vehicle speeds near the maintenance depot have been recorded, and the readings have supported the view that speed control devices are necessary.

Funding

Capital Works of $180,000 funded from the Capital Management Plan.

Work Details

  • Construct 5 No. "Watts Profile" Speed humps, associated concrete kerbing and signage appropriately spaced on the Ring Road between LaTrobe Avenue and Children's Centre roundabout.

  • Provide street lighting for each speed hump as per Australian Standards recommendation.

  • Enforce 40km/hr speed limit on the entire length of the Ring Road from the Gatehouse to the North Entry to improve, in particular, pedestrian safety at crossing points.

Construction Period

May 2008 to August 2008.

Impact

Essential road works are required on the University's Ring Road and therefore from Car Park 6 to Car Park 7, the road will be closed to *all* traffic from Monday 7th July, with reopening expected on Monday 21st July"
