BURF Project - Physical Sciences 4 refurbishment

Purpose

The long awaited update of ageing science facilities made possible with the help of Federal Government funding.

This project will result in internal refurbishment of Levels 1 & 2 of building NW 4 (PS 4) to provide cutting edge wet science facilities for research and post graduate coursework across the wet science disciplines.

Reason for the project

The major portion of this project deals with Laboratory Space Refurbishment to upgrade the lower two levels of NW 4 to the standard of the upper two levels which were renovated over the past three years. The refurbishment will provide a renovated building and give LTU a competitive edge in dealing with the ever increasing scientific and educational demands placed on Universities.

Funding

The Federal Government’s Better University Renewal Fund (BURF) made $5,201,000 available to LTU to cover costs associated with this project.

Work Details

Level 1 will see the conversion of teaching spaces to wet lab space for post graduate students and minor upgrade work to offices.

Level 2 will be refurbished to a layout similar to Level 4. This includes the total renovation of research labs, upgrade of offices, conversion of some offices to lab and equipment areas.

The scope also allows for consequential works in building NW 6 associated with decanting, and upgrading the NW 4 building to comply with current building regulations.

Construction Period

Documentation & Decanting:  October 2008 to April 2009
Decontamination, Demolition, Construction: April 2009 to March 2010.
