Macleod to La Trobe bike path

Purpose

To improve access for cyclists and walkers between Macleod station and La Trobe University through the construction of a well signed and lit bike/walking path.

Reason for the project

To encourage people to use a more sustainable means of transport to and from the University through the construction of an improved path between Macleod station and the University.

Funding

This project was funded jointly by the State Government through its Local Area Access Plan (LAPP) grant scheme, Darebin and Banyule Councils and La Trobe University.

Work Details

A state of the art 3 metre wide concrete path was constructed from Moat Drive to Forensic drive with a branch to the EPA laboratories at Terrace Way. An on-road path was constructed from forensic Drive to Macleod station involving significant road works at Waiora Road and Macleod Station. The whole route is extremely well signed and provided with modern energy efficient lighting where possible.

Construction Period

Construction was carried out from October 2008 til March 2009.

The official opening of the path was held on Thursday 23 April 2009 and was attended by senior staff of the University, local (state) politicians, representatives of Bicycle Victoria, Mayors, Councillors and staff from Darebin and Banyule councils.
