About the Division

Buildings and Grounds, a Division of the Office of the Vice-Principal (Resources and Administration), is responsible for the management of the property portfolio of the University in planning, development and maintenance.


Responsibilities of the Division

The Division’s organisational structure reflects the multi-faceted responsibilities of the Division’s service role to the University:

  • Planning and Capital Projects – Strategic physical planning and asset management, supporting the integration of physical, academic and information technology planning;
  • Operations – Efficient and focussed support services, enabling a quality delivery of teaching and research;
  • Regional Development – Co-ordination of Regional development and operational activities, providing Regional representation on decision-making committees.

There are sixteen Business Units in the Division. These are grouped into management sections, and a number of these have sub-branches which reflect key areas within their operations as follows:

      • Planning and Capital Projects – This section manages the delivery of major Capital Works, the Master Planning of campuses, and all minor works. It also focuses on strategic asset planning that includes space management, identifying the need for new accommodation, and the preparation of briefs for new building projects;

      • Operations – This section manages and maintains the University’s physical infrastructure and is responsible for maintenance, energy services provision, cleaning and environmental services, and mail services. It also has responsibility for the operation of the Melbourne City campus and the Melbourne Wildlife Sanctuary on the Bundoora campus;
      • Regional development – This section manages the co-ordination of all Buildings and Grounds operations on all regional campuses, whilst representing these campuses on Buildings and Grounds committees;
      • Landscaping – This section manages the development and maintenance of the grounds and their landscape;
      • Security, Traffic and Parking – This section manages the security arrangements, and administers the traffic and parking operations;
      • Engineering – This section provides professional mechanical and electrical engineering services to programs and infrastructure projects and maintenance. It also provides energy management programs and initiatives;
      • Financial Services, EnviroSMART and System Administration – These sections service the community with travel advice, and the Division with financial management and systems support.
