ServicesElectronic card access at the Melbourne (Bundoora) CampusStaff and students are required to carry their La Trobe University issued identity cards at all times so that they can easily establish their identity after hours and therefore not be impeded in carrying out their programs of work and research. Requesting accessStaff who have electronic access control to their buildings, or are lecturers wishing to gain access to the various lecture theatres, will require to have their card programmed to gain entry. A request by the relative Department Head or Administrative officer is needed for authorisation, these can be made via the form below. Please note some areas may be restricted and further approval must be obtained from the relevant Area/Department Manager. Alternatively, departments can request that certain students gain access to their buildings and labs after hours by the same method. As of late 2003, all cards issued to staff and students have access control proximity chips installed ready for access control programming. General informationThese details are printed on the card as per the details below: To use the staff or student card on an access control reader, hold the card with arrow down, facing towards you, and lightly touch the reader with the card until you hear an affirmative tone, the door should now unlock (if you have the right to do so). You can now push the door open if single entry, or if access is through automatic doors, they should open for you. Some automatic doors require movement in front of the door sensor before they will open. Teaching venue access - lecturersAll lecture theatres have the ability to lock open and remain open via staff card. Badging is a term named for placing the card in front of the access control reader to enable the reader to read the card. The method described below enables lecturers to open up all doors from one card reader, granting access through all doors of that lecture theatre. If you find the lecture theatre locked; badge the card once to unlock the door, wait two seconds and then badge the card again to keep the doors unlocked. If you need to secure the lecture theatre, after the lecture; the above method applies. Staff access groupAll lecturing staff may have access to the various centrally booked lecture theatres around campus. Each time a new electronic access door is added to a lecture theatredoor, the door is programmed into the lecturing staff access group, making access for lecturers consistent. The following centrally booked lecture theatres and teaching rooms are currently under electronic access control:
LTU Security are investigating the following areas for future access control systems; funding permitted:
Any lecturer requiring access to these buildings should apply through the following online request form: How to badge an electronic access control doorAll La Trobe University card readers and staff / student cards utilise proximity technology; that is, cards no longer need swiping of a bar code (eg: bank/supermarket). The current system is to place the card over the reader and lightly touch the face of the reader. For the older reader; the card is badged over the area indicated below. Some of the very new card readers require placement of the card over the number '5' - near the centre of the reader. These new readers have microphone housing on the left hand side; the placement of the card over the '5', where the proximity chip is, is critical in gaining access. More common readers such as the slim-line proximity readers are easy; just touch the card over the face of the reader. If you require any further information regarding this issue, please do not hesitate to contact Wayne Aldous via email, by phone on Melbourne (Bundoora) extension 1141 or from external (03) 9479 1141.
