Media Releases22 April 2008Posthumous naming honours La Trobe academicThe significant contribution of a former La Trobe academic to the arts in Bendigo will be posthumously acknowledged on 24 April 2008 when the University's Visual Arts Centre auditorium is named in his honour. Dr Barry Brockley worked at La Trobe University, Bendigo Campus, for 32 years before he died after a courageous battle with cancer in February last year. In 1974, Dr Brockley was appointed as a lecturer for the then State College of Victoria, an antecedent of La Trobe University. Dr Brockley began in science education and worked in educational administration and management. He was also a passionate supporter of the arts. After several senior appointments, Dr Brockley took up the position of Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor in 2006, which he held until his retirement in July 2006. La Trobe University's executive director, Bendigo Campus and Dean of Education, Professor Lorraine Ling, said Dr Brockley had a keen interest in the arts and was a driving force in the development of the Visual Arts Centre in View Street. "As chair of the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre Committee, Dr Barry Brockley inspired a multi-disciplinary team to bring to fruition the award-winning building that stands today as testament to his commitment to the arts," said Professor Ling. Professor Ling said that Dr Brockley was highly regarded and respected by colleagues, staff and students alike. "Dr Brockley's leadership and dedication is recognised by all who knew him. We are proud to acknowledge his tremendous contribution by naming the auditorium at the Visual Arts Centre in his memory." Photo OpportunityWhat?
