Gardens
La Trobe at Beechworth's magnificent heritage gardens date back to 1878, with the work of landscape gardener John T. Tozer in conjunction with inmates of the Beechworth Mental Institution. Works were continual over the years, with the improvements undertaken by Hugh Linaker in 1912 and Dr Farren Ridge in 1930 being noteworthy for their planting of many exotic shrub and tree species.

Some native eucalypts are believed to be over 200 years old and one Douglas Fir, at over 55 metres is the tallest tree in the garden. Extensive plantings of rhododendrons and azaleas have thrived in the climate and soil of Beechworth. The Grand Oak drive is one of the gardens most outstanding features.
