Postgraduate Studies

Master of Arts and PhD

Master of Arts by research and Doctor of Philosophy postgraduate students have the opportunity to work with academics from the Faculty’s disciplines and areas of study. Thesis topics can involve more than one discipline, and students can choose to have co-supervisors.

The Masters degree is of two years’ duration and the PhD is four. Masters candidature may be transferred to PhD candidature if the work completed is judged to be of sufficient scope and merit.

Some new Masters degrees are offered as a mix of coursework and thesis. The Masters of Policy Studies is an example. This degree may be completed in one year and requires three units of study and a minor thesis.

The distinction between PhD and Masters by research is based on the scope and quality of the research effort.

Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate

The Graduate Diploma requires one year of study, while the Graduate Certificate requires six months. They provide students with the opportunity to specialise in a particular field of interest. These courses are useful for professional development or personal enhancement.
