2014 Tianjin-Melbourne Dialogue

During the Centre for Dialogue’s visit to China in December 2013 as part of the inaugural Australia China High Level Talks (ACHLT) project, Professor Alberto Gomes, Dr Aran Martin and Ms May-Fei Lee visited Nankai University (Tianjin) and Minzu University (Beijing) to discuss a range of possible collaborations relating to the broader programme of the ACHLT.

The ACHLT is a major initiative of the Centre for Dialogue and the Centre for China Studies at La Trobe University, in partnership with Peking University, the Australia China Business Council, the State Government of Victoria (Department of State Development, Business and Innovation), Air China and the Foundation for Australia Studies in China (FASIC).

Outcomes from the visit included the inclusion of a Tianjin-Melbourne cooperation session within the inaugural Tianjin Forum, planned for August-September 2014.

The Centre for Dialogue will hold further negotiations with government, business and university sectors with the intention of sending a strong Victorian delegation to Tianjin to discuss possible session themes, including urban development, cultural engagement, and cooperation in medical research.

A formal agreement between the Korean Foundation and Nankai University establishing the Tianjin Forum is expected in February 2014.

The Centre for Dialogue’s cooperation with Nankai University extends a long tradition of engagement with Tianjin by La Trobe University, including ongoing research collaboration between La Trobe University’s Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre and the Tianjin government in the field of women and children’s health research.
