Asian Studies Program
Research
The staff in the Asian Studies Program are involved in a diverse range of research projects in linguistics, literature, religion, politics, sociology, and education, focusing on China, India, Indonesia, Japan.
Among its many research activities, the program has conducted a series of ARC funded research projects exploring the Chinese diaspora in Australia, their linkages throughout the region and their contribution to Australian society; it has produced a series of translations projects related to Sanskrit, Hindi and Indonesian texts; it has been at the forefront of several applied linguistic research projects on the teaching of Chinese, Japanese and Indonesian in Australian schools.
The wide scope of the program’s research activities is demonstrated by the fact that it has scholars who work on pre-modern societies and culture, using ancient Sanskrit and Pali texts and medieval Japanese literary writings, as well as those whose expertise lies in the areas of Japanese youth and education in contemporary Japan and ethnic minorities in the construction of Chinese national identity.
