Australian Study of Health and Relationships

Welcome to the Australian Study of Health and Relationships (ASHR).

This is an unprecedented Australian study of 19,307 Australian men and women aged 16-59 addressing a numerous aspects of sexual and reproductive health. It is considered the largest and most significant study of its kind undertaken in Australia.

This study was a collaborative project between numerous organisations. The research team was led by Professor Anthony Smith from the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) at LaTrobe University, Clinical Associate Professor Chris Rissel of the the Central Sydney Area Health Service and the University of Sydney, Associate Professor Juliet Richters from the School of Public Health and Community Medicine and Professor Andrew Grulich from the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research both from the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Dr Richard de Visser, the research officer for the study, was based at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society.

This study was developed with the support of the National Health and Medical Research Council and funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care.

The project also engaged an expert advisory committee which included Professor John Kaldor from the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research, Professor Sue Kippax from the National Centre in HIV Social Research, Associate Professor Judy Simpson from the University of Sydney, Dr Louisa Jorm from the New South Wales Department of Health and representatives from the Population Health Division of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care.
