A MODERN GRAND TOUR
Grahame King's European Drawings, 1947- 1949
In 1947 Grahame King, like so many other young Australian artists, left for Europe on a journey of artistic discovery. He wanted to see and learn from the Old Masters while becoming acquainted with modernism at its core.
Basing himself in England, King travelled through the UK and parts of Continental Europe where he captured the life and essence of cities like Rome, Florence and Venice, towns like Orvieto and Colmar and regions from Normandy to Sussex.
This exhibition presents a collection of these intimate and accomplished drawings. They reveal a young man fascinated by his new surroundings and an artist with an incredible eye and sensibility for his subject. |

THE BRILLIANT LIGHT OF THE RED SUN
Images of Childhood and Youth in Chinese Political Posters from the Stewart E. Fraser Collection
Often described as ‘propaganda’, political posters have enjoyed a rich history in China as a means of mass communication, utilising both the visual and the printed word to convey anything from images of political leaders and revolutionary heroes, to the glorification of technology and the importance of family planning.
The Brilliant Light of the Red Sun presents a selection of over sixty Chinese political posters, drawn from the Stewart E. Fraser Collection held at La Trobe University, dating from 1962 to 1987. The exhibition takes as its focus images of childhood and youth, exploring the iconography of the Cultural Revolution and beyond, into the period of China’s Modernisation of the 1980s. |

BETWEEN THE LINE
Drawings by Philip Hunter
For over twenty-five years Philip Hunter has explored the Australian landscape. Known, predominately as a painter, his work has investigated and attempted to understand the world and the way we experience. His calligraphic marks don’t seek to replicate the landscape rather they aim to reinterpret it. This exhibition brings together a collection of Hunter’s drawings, revealing his skill as a draftsman. Like his paintings these works investigate the power imbedded in the landscape and the multiple histories it contains. Moreover, it invites the viewer to enter the spaces hidden between the lines.
