Surreal La Trobe
Of the many fads, fashions and …isms which have influenced developments in Australian art for much of the twentieth century, surrealism is amongst the most persuasive and persistent.

The works selected for inclusion in Surreal La Trobe, (an exhibition drawn from the collections held by La Trobe University), are representative of European Surrealists' influence on Australian art and artists. Despite appearances, however, it would be a mistake to assume that all of the artists represented embraced the Surrealists' philosophy in its entirety.

More an exhibition of influence, Surreal La Trobe is representative of paradox in Australian art, and the quirky ways in which global influences have been reformed to meet Australian expectations of art and artists.

Floor Talks: 12.30 pm Wednesday 10 March, 24 March

Eleanor Hart: Recent Paintings
Eleanor Hart's recent paintings are joyous celebrations of art, memories of childhood and rediscovery of her Viennese heritage. Recalling her childhood in suburban Melbourne, she describes her parents' house and garden filled with colour and visitors, eating, singing and talking…ever talking about life and experiences. Later, and as artist, she discovered her parents' Europe for herself, which is the subject of her brilliantly coloured paintings in the style of Australian abstract expressionism.
